Rain Setup is a tool for Maya that allows to quickly populate 3D scenes with rain, including splashes.

I developed the tool for Johannes Weiland's Graduate Film Annie and Boo at Filmakademie Baden-Wuerttemberg which required a LOT of rain shots to be done in a short amount of time.

Because I had to work on several rather involved CG smoke shots for the film, the comparatively easy rain shots needed to be animated by animators. This meant the rain setup tool had to be both easy-to-use and robust, as the animators working on the rain shots weren't familiar enough with Maya particles and dynamics.

Key Features:
  • Artist friendly interface and control objects to control all rain attributes
  • One-click capability to create rainSetups
  • One click option to assign collisions and rainSplashes to Annie and Boo characters via "collision sets" or arbitrary scene geometry
  • Sprite-based particles result in almost real-time performance allowing for more shot iterations and faster rendering
